Thinking It So: Affirmations

Masaro Emoto’s water crystal study.

We know that saying nice things to others is effective in making someone else feel good and by doing so it can even help them accomplish their dreams. But, does saying nice things to ourselves have the same affect? Yes, it does. That is called an affirmation or positive self-talk — and there is proof that it can have a huge positive impact on our lives. In 1954, Roger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile barrier. He did this by visualizing and affirming to himself the achievement continuously in order to create a knowing in his mind and body. Affirmation in his case reinforced his knowing he could make this run and break a record. In 2004 Masaru Emoto an internationally renowned Japanese scientist shared his discovery in the movie, “What The Bleep Do You Know.” His discovery that the molecular structure of water is changed by our thoughts. In 2016, a study at Kings College proved that affirmations with added visualization were even more effective than just words alone. So affirm away that you are so loved, abundant, happy and healthy, and see it so.

DreamyKid has an entire section of affirmations for you to explore with your child. For example, if your child tends to wake up not wanting to get out of bed this may be the perfect affirmation “I love my knees, I love my toes, I love my belly, I love my nose, I love my heart,” by Taes of The Big Heart Journey. This affirmation also asks your child to move their body by touching the body part being called on. Maybe your child is feeling school nervousness try this affirmation “you are a star, you are bright, you are expansive, you have a light that is unique to you,” by Jenna Walter of DreamyKid. Affirmations, much like meditation, succeeds in making deep and longstanding positive change in its repetition. Find one that you love and have your child use that as a focus affirmation for a period of time or use a combination on a regular basis. You and your child will be so happy you did.
